First off there are 6 strings on a guitar. You'd think that the string closest to the ceiling is string #1, but musically it is string #6 and here is how.
The string closest to the ground is considered string #1. It should be the thinnest and highest pitched string. The string closest to either you are the ceiling is string #6. It should be the thickest string with the lowest pitch.
String 1 (closest to the ground) = High E
String 2 = B string
String 3 = G string
String 4 = D string
String 5 = A string
String 6 = Low E
